Monthly Message

The Wutherich & Co. Composite was down 0.7% in May versus the S&P/TSX being up 2.8%.

“Sell in May and Go Away” certainly seemed to affect some of our stocks during the month. Recent quarterly results were reported for most of our companies and there was a mix of excellent numbers combined with some weaker outcomes. A few of our names have short-term challenges which, for now, look surmountable.

With cash on hand plus the proceeds of the HIBB takeover coming to about 13.5% of the portfolio, we have a lot that we can deploy in new and existing positions. The summer is typically a weak time of year for stocks: Think “Sell in May and Go Away”. Great by us. We’ll take advantage of any weakness. While many of our favourite names have appreciated significantly recently, we have some ideas on where to put the money. The additions will likely be Canadian stocks as we generally find better value on this side of the border. We think the current portfolio, with one or two additions, has the potential to deliver strong long-term returns
